Dorking, North Downs :: 4th March
Again Open Adventure travels down south to bring the Open5 event format south of London.
The North Downs has to be one of the most beautiful parts of the country with diverse woodlands and pretty villages around every corner. But don't be under the impression that just because it's in the south east it will be any easier. There are certainly one or two surprises in store for the discerning adventure racer!
This one is being planned by James Thurlow and Dave Johnson. James has lots of local knowledge having lived in this area for years before emigrating north to the Lakes.

Help needed - We are a little short on volunteers for this event, so if there is anyone local who is willing to help out for a short time afterwards it would be very much appreciated. We will need help collecting signs, controls and packing up the venue after prize giving. Not asking for a massive time commitment just an hour from a few folks makes all the difference.
[1/3] Area conditions - Our planning team has just returned from final preparations in the event area. The reports coming back are that trail conditions are good, so we are expecting some fast running and riding in Sundays event. The area is very popular with visitors and we would ask that your are really careful when biking and running around between controls and courteous to all people you meet. Please remember to look up from your map now and again so that you can take in the wonderful views of the stunning location you are in and also avoid that buggy/horse/biker coming your way!
Controls - You will be using the same area for the bike and run on this event. So it is quite likely you will come across run controls while on the bike and bike controls while on the run. Please don't just dib a control unless you are certain it is the one you want. i.e the number on the box corresponds to the number on your map. If you dib a run control while on the bike or bike control while on the run our software will detect this on downloading your results and will not only result in the loss of those points, but a 20 point pentalty will also be applied for each control where this has occurred. Please don't do it as we don't like applying penalties and your score will not reflect your effort on the day!
[27/02] Water - The location of the transition is in the middle of a forest. There are no facilties at this location. Please ensure that you bring enough water/drinks to last for ther entire duration of the event and that you use toilets at the school before departing for transition.
[22/02] Transition - The transition for this event is a pleasant 4km bike ride away from registration on quiet country lanes. Most of the ride is gently undulating, but there is a steep climb towards the end. The ride to transition is not part of the event and you should allow 20-30 minutes to complete this. Please carry all kit required for the event to transition in a bag you can carry on your shoulders. Driving from registration to transition is not allowed. Anyone arriving by car will be asked to return to registration.
Bike Hire - Astounding Adventures are offering a bike hire service for this event. They have a range of bikes available for hire from £20-£30. If you need a bike for this event then you can contact them on 0333 121 2125 or firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a bike.
Dorking is only 30 miles from London. So you could take the opportunity to visit some of the capital city's most famous landmarks. There are loads to choose from; Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, Piccadilly Circus etc etc.
