Crowcombe, Quantocks :: 8th January
Our first venture down south for an Open5. We are visiting the picturesque location of the Quantocks for the 4th event in the series. This area rightly earned the status of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.
The planner for this event is 2010 Open24 planner, Andy Wilson. He is just itching to get the Open5 contingent into the West Country to show what this area has to offer.

[06/01] The start list is now available. You will need to bring your team number to the registration desk (see below). Also pairs will need to register together - the race pack will can only be handed out once both competitors have registered.
[05/01] A couple of last minute updates ...
FREE tea and coffee - will be available at the hall on a self service basis. There will be some cups available, but it would be great if you can bring your own mug.
Wonky maps - In order to fit the controls onto the maps and to print them out with as much detail as possible we have rotated the content of both maps slightly. We have also added a north arrow to each map to ensure you know which way is up!
[04/01] The planning team have been putting the finishing touches to the Open5 in the Quantocks and it certainly is shaping up to be one to remember.A couple of final points to note for this event are :-
No Catering - that there will be no caterer at this event. We had arranged with a local caterer to be there, but they pulled out just before Christmas. Further searches for a replacement caterer have been unsuccessful. We will have our hot water urns in the hall and tea and coffee will be available. But please either bring your own food or if you would like a post-event feast then I'm sure the Carew Arms in the village will be glad to see you.
Remote transition - As mentioned previously in the updates the transition is a 2km ride from registration with 200m of ascent. Our advice is not to carry your kit to this location in a box, use a rucksack instead. Balancing a box on the handlebars on the ride back from transition is not recommended! Also parking will be in Crowcombe near the village hall. Competitors should not drive from registration to the start. There is parking for event vehicles only at this location.
Mandatory kit checks - We recently made the decision to perform mandatory kit checks prior to the start of our events. This will continue at this event. Please ensure you are carrying :- a whistle, first aid kit, foil blanket, mobile phone and money for a payphone. A waterproof top is also mandatory for this event. We will not insist on rear bike lights for this one. We will be looking out for what you are carrying out of transition too, so don't think about ditching the mandatory kit half way through! If in doubt about the kit list and rules please take a look here.
[28/12] For 2012 we are looking at making a few small safety improvements at event registration. By noon on Friday before the event, we'll publish race numbers here. You'll need this number prior to arriving at registration. If you have your own SI Card you must also bring this to registration. Don't worry if you forget your SI Card, we will have spares for hire at £2.50. We can't give you your race pack without attaching a SI Card to your wrist first.
[17/12] Some event updates...
Bike servicing - We have teamed up with Six Cycles of Taunton who will be at registration with their bike servicing van. If you arrive at registration and your bike needs attention before you start, pay Steve a visit and I'm sure he'll do his best to get you going again.
Parking - Parking in Crowcombe village is a little limited. The parish council are happy for us to use street parking in the village. Follow the directions of the marshalls on the day and please be considerate and do not block driveways when parking on the street.
Transition - The location for transition for this event is a 2km ride from registration. So you will need to carry everything you need for the day to this place. It may be easier to pack your event kit into a bag with a shoulder strap or rucksack rather than trying to balance a box on your handlebars!.
