Well for those that made last years event will know this is a pretty special 5 hours. For this year we are travelling to a beautiful location the Island of Anglesey The event as ever will include the usual fare of running and cycling but don't expect it to stop there as we throw in surprises that will make your ears curl. This event is for pairs only and sold out last year - so best get that entry in. If the event does not sell out entries will close on Monday 16th May - no entries on the day For those looking to make a weekend of it, there will be a kayaking event on Sunday 22nd May 2011 not that far from the Open5+. more details on www.oceankayakrace.com Below is some outline information to give you an idea of the kit and timetable. Please note that these will be updated so please keep an eye on this page. Special Stage Kit required In addition to the normal kit required for an Open5 you will require.
In 2010 Open Adventure developed a ropes certificate which was made a requirement for the adidas TERREX event. This certificate whilst not a requirement for this event will enable competitors to travel quicker through sections of this event. If you are not signed off you can download a copy here and send this in to Open Adventure for us to update your profile. |

[20/05] You ready? We nearly are :-) At registration you will be given an event bib, mountain bike number and the maps for the event. Just hold off on the questions till the briefing. Somethings are changing as we speak and we have printed the maps out. The weather has a factor to and decisions on what we will do excactly won't be made until tomorrow morning.
On that note we will be including a short kayak section - for those doing the Ocean Kayak Race, we will premept the question and say you can't use your own paddles. Begging to get someone kebabed riding around with on of them on the bike.
Just a reminder if you have a rope ticket - please bring it with you, ideally send a pic of it to us before. Check the entry list to make sure if you think you have sent one in that there is a green tick against your name. For those who have the rope tick we will be putting a second Tyrek strap on your wrist so the rope techs know you have the ticket.
Have a good day - Right see you tomorrow.. James
[18/05] We have just tweaked the timetable. Just so you know the start will not be a mass start but rather staggered start where we will give you your start time. It will be spread over 30 mins with a team leaving every 30 seconds. The start list will be posted at registration. The start will be 5 min cycle from registration and you will set off from the start on bike. If you want to return to registration to get access to any spare clothing or kit you can do so at anytime during the event.
[17/05] OK been out in Anglesey for the last couple of days as well as fielding some of your emails. First thing think carefully if you are intending to wear shorts - most of the foot controls are on or near paths but there are a few off piste and if you decide to take a short cut the little gorse bushes may draw blood.
We have also updated the link to the entry list - it now shows for whom we have a record for the ropes certification. Please check it - if you have a certificate best wing us a photo of it or worst case bring it to the event. Don't think you can blag it.. won't wash never has done and never will - we are keen to be transparent with you all.
Entries are still open for the Ocean Kayak Race - we have heard a few experienced racers say they are worried that they are not up to the mark for this event. Don't worry - if you are a TERREX vetran then give it a look. If you turn up and think its a bit full on for you ability don't worry we will sort out a refund (only if you turn up though, none of this my rabbit died can I get refund malarky..)
Will post an update later in the week.
[11/05] Since the last posting we have had a good number of questions around bikes. Can we use Hybird / Cyclo Cross or even Road bikes. Our approach to events has been for you to make the choice of which tool is best for the job.
We have always allowed people to use cyclo cross bikes on our events - so to ban road bikes is a bit of a nonsense. However we are also aware on how precious people are about their road bikes and there are a number of pot holes gravel tracks you MAY find yourself on. In essence its entirely up to you, but the majority of the cycle section is on road.
[06/05] Not long now to the Open5+, as you can see above the venue has been announced. The event promises some surprises as we use a different style of maps and include a few quirky challenges that will make you smile and maybe wince. It should be a fun weekend even if you don't want to do the Ocean Kayak Race why not stay the weekend and camp at Anglesey Outdoors should be a good time had by all.
Cycling - there is not going to be the usual fare of off-road cycling but bikes will be required to get around.. so much so if you have some road tyres for that MTB worth popping them on.
We have extended the entry deadline, although there is an upper limit to this event. Heck knows if we will fill it but it be shame not to see you because you left it too late. click on that entry button now.
Check out the Ocean Kayak Race on the Sunday
