Bakewell, Peak District :: 6th March

Intro  ::  Details: Weather, etc  ::  Event Updates  ::  Make a weekend of it..

The 4th Open 5 of this season takes place from the historic market town of Bakewell in the Peak District. The event centre will be the Bakewell Agricultural Centre with free parking by permit issued at registration. The planner for this event is Open Adventure regular Ian Hughes, who has planned the previous two Open 5's in the Peak District.

About BAKEWELL - 'ancient capital of the Peak...' Famous for its Puddings, Annual events and for receiving royal charter as a market town in 1330, markets are still held every Monday in the town centre and there is a thriving livestock market.

The town has a long and fascinating history; mentioned in the Dooms Day Book of 1085, `Badequella’ meaning Bath-well.
The town was built on the West bank of the Wye at a spot where it was fordable.

There are many bridleways in the area, and although not mountainous, the terrain is undulating and very rideable in most conditions. The aim of this event will be to keep you riding not pushing and cover plenty of ground on foot with great sights along the way.

Event Updates

[04/03] If you have not yet acquired a bell or not seen the update about having to have one for this event, then worry not as Big Bear Bikes have come up trumps and are sending us some bells. These will be available from registration at the bargain price of £1.50. Please let registration know if you would like to buy one.

[25/02] More updates...

Conditions - On a recent trip to Bakewell the team found some of the bridleways and footpaths to be quite muddy, so unless there is a heatwave between now and the event the going is likely to be very soft. We would recommend grippy shoes and tyres for traction on this event.

Parking - There will be a free car park pass included in your registration race pack. Please display this on your dashboard on return to your car as the pay and display car park will also be used by the general public during the day.

Food - The caterers at this event (Farmers Feast cafe) located inside the venue provide a carvery meal as well as other tasty treats on a Sunday. If you wish to have a carvery meal after the event, please pre-order this at the Farmers Feast counter before you start so they know how much post-event carvery food to prepare. Please note there is no need to pre-order normal buffet food which will be in plentiful supply post-event.

[22/02] For further clarification of the bell situation. It doesn't have to be a bell - we will allow other types of sound emitting warning devices. But please don't arrive with the compressed air horn type.

[12/02] Updates...

Bakewell Bells - For this event we have been granted a licence to use a very popular tourist trail for the MTB stage. We are talking walkers, kids, dogs, horses and other cyclists! The condition of use is that all competitors have a bell fitted and use this to warn other trail users and also slow down when passing. We will be checking for bells on the start line. Anyone attempting to start without one will not be allowed to cycle on the trail and will not be able to access any CP's located along the trail.

Transition - is located close by to registration for this one - phew!

Food - is available at the agricultural centre before and after the event. Bakewell is also a busy little town so lots of options for food. A real bakewell pudding is also a must before you leave (see 'Make a weekend of it..' below)...

Further updates on conditions etc. will be posted closer to the event...

Make a weekend of it..

A visit to Bakewell is not complete without sampling a Bakewell Pudding - perfect pre or post race food!!  http://www.bakewellpuddingshop.co.uk/
