Sutton Bank, North York Moors :: 9th January 2011
Intro :: Details: Weather, etc :: Event Updates :: Make a weekend of it..

Rescheduled from 5th December due to a couple of feet of snow. Open Adventure returns to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park for the second round of the Open5 series with guest planner Andy Conn. The venue is the visitors center at the top of Sutton Bank (aka Jack-Knife Bank). The tremendous views from the top of Sutton Bank must rank as some of the finest in Britain; the top is actually one of those plateaux, around 300m elevation.Hmmmm? Whether you will have time to enjoy the view, is your choice. Andy will be finding lots of interesting areas in the area, both by bike and on foot. But severe drops to the south and west to the Vale of York and steep gacial valleys to the east will make this a good area to challenge your lungs, legs and brains. In summary Andy is promising an interesting event!

[06/01] more updates...
Water services - Good news... We have just heard that water services have now been restored at the visitor centre. This means that teas and coffees will be available on arrival.
Morning Food - Not so good news... There is a chance that the catering staff won't be there early enough to serve breakfasts. So it may be an idea to get something before you arrive or bring something with you to eat just in case centre cafe is closed. Thirsk has loads of food shops & cafe's, not sure what time they open up though!
Map date - On receiving your map the eagle eyed among you will notice that the date is still quoted as 5th December 2010. The reason for this is that the maps were all prepared for the original event date. We thought it would be a bit daft and a waste of paper reprinting them just to put a new date on. I'm sure you'll all agree.
Parking - The car park at the visitor centre is pay and display. The cost is £2.20 to park for the whole day. Please ensure you purchase and display your ticket on arrival.
[05/01] Sutton Bank visitor centre are currently awaiting the repair of burst pipes which supply the cafe with drinking water. This is also affecting the cafe's ability to serve drinks. The repair should be completed before the weekend, but it may be wise to fill your hydration systems before you leave home, just in case it is not fixed. Toilet facilities are available as they were unaffected by the burst pipes. We'll have a further update on this on Friday so please check back then.
[04/01] Conditions at Sutton Bank have certainly changed since our last trip out there! As of Sunday 2nd Jan most of the snow has gone. There are some icy patches still around resulting from hard packed snow (mostly on farm tracks). Other paths could be either firm or muddy depending on the temperature on the day. The car park at Sutton Bank Visitor Centre is all clear so no problem with parking. Food and drinks will be available from the visitor centre cafe before and after the event.
It's January! I recommend taking it easy and visiting one of the many interesting towns in the area. Whitby, Helmsley, Scarborough, Northallerton, Robin Hood's Bay, Pickering or even York. Or book into one of the many quality local pubs, have a good lunch/dinner and a few beers, save yourself for the racing on Sunday.
If you must have exercise, Dalby Forest is not far away, good bike trails, venue for 2010 World Cup race. Bring spare pads for your brakes! The North York Moors National Park is a beautiful landscape of stunning moorland, spectacular coast, ancient woodland and historic sites.
