Coniston - 15/05/10 - Open5+

Intro  ::  Details: Weather, etc  ::  Event Updates  ::  Make a weekend of it..

Well for those that made last years event will know this is a pretty special 5 hours. For this year we are partnering up with the National Trust who are keen to showcase some of the great landscape around Coniston.

The event as ever will include the usual fare of running and mountain biking but don't expect it to stop there as we through in surprises that will make your ears curl.

This event is for pairs only and sold out last year - so best get that entry in. If the event does not sell out entries will close on Wednesday 12th May - no entries on the day

Oh yes and the planner for this event is a James Thurlow.

Event Updates

[14/5] Last update - entries are closed so if you need to make any changes best sort it out on the day with Lisa or Rob..

If you have a camp chair bring it along to enjoy the sun after the event. Wilfs will be in attendance so will be hot drinks and food around to wash down the delights of the day. Likewise don't forget they will be around first thing in the morning.

The first stage is a trail run.. You will need to carry all of the mandatory kit listed in the normal Open5 kit list (here). We don't envisage you needing to carry a waterproof on the run but you WILL need to take one on the MTB stage.

There will be a random kit check once or twice during the event. See you all tomorrow.

[12/5] OK couple of things... First of all one of the special stages is a little full on. The normal rule for collecting points is that both competitors have to visit a control for the pair to be awarded the points. For one control on a special stage this will not apply.. if one of you visits this control and not the other you will be awarded 50% of the points. HOWEVER you do need to tell us at download as the software won't pick this up and we will have to manually credit your score. Don't bother emailing us the week after or telling us during prize giving.

On that note we like to keep prize giving snappy.. so please dont' wander off to coniston for a beer.. we hope to have it all done and dusted quickly. PlanetFear have come up trumps with prizes on all the events. So in addition to a £10 Anquet voucher winners will get | 1st place £35, 2nd place £25 and 3rd place £15 planetFear vouchers (per person not per pair)

Morning constitution.. nope nothing to do with politics more to do with other daily paperwork. Yep if you need to a dunny before the event try and use one before you arrive.. there are toilets by the tourist information centre in Coniston. There is limited toilet facilities in the carpark at the top end of the lake. Maybe I need to reword that.. suggestions welcome.

[10/5] We will keep drip feeding updates this week.. one of the special stages is a little damp (if you elect to do it), so you will NEED to carry some spare clothes on the bike. Don't ask anymore because you will get a blank look from this end.. Also on the bike stage you will need to carry or wear non-cleated shoes.

Another optional special stage is a short orienteering section - planner for this is Steve Mclean he spends much of his day teaching kids orienteering.. that said there is bit of a wicked streek in this fella. Anyway expect to see a different type of map at the give out.

A few emails flying this way about hiring climbing helmets - you can do this on our website. Login and under MY RACES then click amend equipment. You will see an option here to hire climbing helmets for £7 each.

Back later in the week.

[29/4] Couple of little updates - entries for this event close Wednesday 12th unless we fill up before then, which happened last year. And if you check out the google map up on the right you will see the location has moved - the event will be based on a field at the top end of the Lake.

Wilfs will be in attendance from 8.00 so bring your pennies to get some breakfast and refuel after the event..

[12/4] Just added a timetable for the day - please note this differs slightly from a normal Open5..

Make a weekend of it..

Check back later...
