Lake District 01/11/09

Intro  ::  Details: Weather, etc  ::  Event Updates  ::  Make a weekend of it..

The first event of the Mountain Hardwear Open5 series kicks off in the Lake District with veteren Open5 competitor and local to the south Lakes Anthony Cooper as the planner.

VENUE CHANGE

OK tricky decision today (Friday), with the forecast for gusts up to 80mph on Sunday we were concerned about our plan to ship competitors across the lake on the car ferry. Not so much that we wouldn't be able to get you across but more importantly that we wouldn't get you back if the wind developed during the day!

As such we have made a few phone calls and decided to relocate registration and the start to Hawkshead. Registration will be at the primary school. With the parking behind the recreation field. We will sign post the junctions to make it clear where to park and we will have marshalls on hand.

Due to the change of venue the start / finish area will now be close to the parking.

As a result of the above food will not be available after the event (teas and coffees will).

Those hiring bikes will need to collect them from Grizedale Mountain Bikes prior to the event.

Event Updates

[30/10 04.00 pm] Please read details above in regards to the change in venue. Please accept our apologies for making this change at the very last minute.

[30/10 09.20 am] Can you please check these updates at 4pm this afternoon. I'm sure it won't come as a surprise to anyone who competed in the 2nd ever Open5 where we also had registration in Bowness, that our plan was to ship you over on the car ferry and for the start / finish area to be on the otherside of the lake.

With high winds forecast for Sunday we are concerned that the car ferry won't run so we in the process of exploring alternatives and talking this over with Cumbria Council who run the ferry service.

If a change of venue for registration / carparking is made we will update this website by 4pm this afternoon.

[27/10] OK two things today - there will be a couple of areas on the RUN where you will use a footpath or bridleway and has privately owned land on either side of the path, this area will be very tempting to short cut across. In summary don't - we will find you out and remove all your RUN points, if in doubt ask around we have done it before. Normally we try and avoid presenting this temptation but its unavoidable here and you are all adults.

Secondly this an event where you may pass MTB controls whilst on the RUN and vice versa. We have a fancy bit of software that highlights those people who have punched controls on the wrong stage but we have to manually adjust your scores to correct this. Its all time consuming and ultimately delays the prize giving. Hence for this season we are introducing a new rule.

  • If you punch a MTB control whilst on the RUN or vice versa not only will we remove that control from your score but we will also deduct your score by 20pts for each time it happens.

Sounds a little vicious but there is a simple solution just check the checkpoint number before waving your timing chip in front of the control.

Enough of this horribleness - more news later in the week, best start carbo loading with some cake.

[26/10] OK few little details to update. First of all if you are hiring a bike you need to collect it from Windermere Canoe and Kayak. Its not that far from registration but you will need to make sure you have enough time to collect it before the start.

The start / finish / transition is about 30 mins away from registration. So again please allow enough time. Any starters after 10.30 will have their start punch changed to 10.30 - in other words arrive early and do the faffing the night before.

We won't have any water at the start / finish / transition so please take all that you need with you.

We will have teas and coffees available at registration with a £1 honesty box for each brew. All the money will go to the Lake District Fix the Fells Project.

The boathouse is making available soup and roll for £3.50 after the event. There will be a sign up sheet at regsitration so they know how much to make.

Remember bring some sun lotion we don't want any of you getting burnt..

Check back later in the week for an update.

[18/10] Location updated in details above.

Make a weekend of it..

Well what not to do? OK so it might be a little chilly but a visit down to Windermere Canoe and Kayak for any hardy racers trying to get a bit of paddling in won't go amiss. For the tourists the Windermere Lake Cruisers are reknown for being one of the best trips in the country.

If getting out for a walk is your thing and you have family on tow, why not check out Gummers How or Brant Fell for a little mountain complete with the views. If the outdoor shopping fix is your bag then it will be difficult to pass Ambleside although don't fall in to the trap of goretex bitching all the other pedestrians browsing and check out Stock Gyhll Force or for the more adventurous head up Loughrigg.
