Open12 - Kit List and Rules

This page is still a provisional list until we confirm the special stages, please do not purchase expensive items without consulting us.

We only have a few rules which are in place primarily for your safety and secondly to create a fair event.  We would appreciate if you would abide by these and the spirit in which they are written.  Deliberate infringement will not result in any loss of points just disqualification.

Bikes and kit – Open Adventure will transport your bikes and one kit bag (per pair) for you to access at the transition points. .

The maximum size of the bag (approx 50ltr rucksack or duffle bag) should not exceed 1000 long x 400 wide x 400 high and should not weigh any more than 15kg – competitors have in the past pushed beyond these limits we will be VERY strict this year, expect to see a set of scales when you hand in your bag.  We will supply race numbers to affix to your bag, and your bike. Please note that the bags could well be stacked on each other so pack anything

Kit We have put together a list of mandatory kit for safety reasons – at any point during or prior to the event random checks may take place.  The kit on the list is for each person in the pair unless stated.  The list is likely to change in the coming months as the challenges are finalised.

It is very likely that during the course of the event you will get wet and as such you should use a waterproof bag/container for relevant parts of the kit list (e.g. phone).

Mandatory - All sections

  • First Aid Kit (per pair)
    • (Minimum of crepe bandage, triangular bandage, wound dressing, 2 safety pins and 6 adhesive dressings)
  • Mobile phone (per pair)
  • Money for phone (per pair)

  • Cycle Helmet - We would recommend a multi sport helmet for this event
  • Front and rear cycle lights
  • Puncture Repair Kit (per pair)
  • Spare inner tube (per pair)
  • Bike Tool (per pair)
  • Pump (per pair

Mandatory – Special Stages

  • Harness - less than 5 year old with CE mark * see notes below
  • Climbing Helmet (not cycle helmet) - We would recommend a multi sport helmet for this event
  • Head torch that fits on climbing helmet
  • 2 x Screw gate karabiners
  • 1 x 120cm leash slings (240cm circumference)

We have over the past three years have had tremendous problems on rope stages, with competitors not able to fit their own harnesses (e.g buckles not doubled back, harness on the wrong way around, etc). On one event the event safety staff estimated that 30-40% of harnesses' on competitors arriving at special stages had been put on incorrectly.

For this event it is expected that you can fit your own harness and attach a karabiner to a rope. If you are at all in doubt please employ an instructor at your local climbing wall who will happily show you. Our event staff can not run training sessions during the event and as such if you arrive with kit incorrectly fitted you will not be able to complete the special stage.

Mandatory – As specified on control description cards

  • Spare long sleeved top and leggings e.g. thermal top and tracksters
  • Hat can be a “buff”
  • Waterproof jacket with hood for trek/ run
  • Waterproof over trousers
  • Torch with spare batteries, or an extra torch

If you have any comments in regards to the rules or the kit list please don’t hesitate to contact us, preferably before you infringe them.
