Open12 Adventure Race 26/27th June 2010

Looking for 12 hours of Adventure Racing, then be prepared for the Open12. The location is the Yorkshire Dales and promises to deliver some real surprises.

Our planner behind this event is Dave Johnson, this man has competed in ALL of the endurance series events over the past 5 years and has planned a few Open5's. So expect an event that lives up to our high standards.

Concept - A slight departure from years gone by. This will be a game of two halves, with 6 hours racing - an overnight rest and another 6 hours racing. The rest period will be during the night and we will deliver a tent to this area if you wish to use one.

All competitors will have some element of the event in the dark.

In the 12 hours of racing the idea is to visit as many points (controls) as you can. The event will be split up in to a number of stages where you will change over disciplines.

The event at its core will involve mountain biking and running (there is no paddling in this one - bit tricky in the dales!)

The event will also include special stages (or trouser fillers as we like to call them). More on these later in 2010.

Time - more details here but in summary you need to register between 9 and 10 on the Saturday morning and the start will be just after lunch, finishing around lunchtime on Sunday.

Scoring - The event will use the SPORTident system of scoring. The cards used are the higher capacity SI-6 cards. SI Cards are available to rent at £2.50 per person or can be purchased online from SPORTident.

Event Updates

[25/6] The last day.. no more crucial updates. A few notes - time is short on Saturday morning both for you and us. Bags and bikes have to be handed in before you get on the coach to the start (all explained in the event notes which you will be given at registration) - we just ask that you don't leave this till the last minute. If your bike is ready please hand it in rather than wait till 11.00. Its in your interest to be ready on time.

The weather is looking pretty hot as well, although it can get a little drafty on the tops. We like to adopt a bit of common sense on our events so if blue sky reigns, we won't insist on a full waterproof but would recommend at least a windproof. Update at event briefing.

That's all from us - look forward to seeing your smiling faces tomorrow.

[22/6] OK just a few tweaks to the kit list none will cause any grief.. on the MTB stage on the first day there is a control you may wish to visit that can only be collected if you are wearing non-cleated shoes. So to be clear you either need to be wearing trainers whilst cycling or carry a spare pair of shoes.

Also have removed bike lights - be a very very very bad day if you need these! .

[21/6] Oops sorry - it has been pointed out that goggles are not on kit list yet mentioned below - absent minded web geek here typed it on the list but didn't upload it for you to see. Now added. They are recommended but not mandatory.

[21/6] For those looking to camp near registration on the Friday night, we would suggest Street Head Caravan park - they have a nice campfield next door. Its also next to a pub where you may find a few of us enjoying a drink on Friday night. Its 1.5miles from West Burton. You can turn up and pay on arrival (£10 for a 2 man tent).

[21/6] IMPORTANT OK Dave and I have been out in the Dales over the weekend and as a result there are a few important changes to the event.

Parking | An Open Adventure Endurance Series car sticker should be placed in competitors car. The will either be handed out at registration. This will act as a parking permit for the duration of the event.

Timings | Timings for day 1 and day 2 have now been finalised. Day 1 will be 7 hours in duration and day 2 will be 5 hours. The reason for this is that there is more fun to be had on day 1 and we wanted the timings to reflect this. As a result the published timetable on the event details page has changed. Please review this page for amended details.

Logistics | The start on day1 will be a mass start. The first stage of day 1 will be a run. The only equipment required for special stages on day 1 will be your climbing helmet and your goggles. Your climbing helmet will be transported separately by event staff and will be available for collection before the start of the special stage. Please ensure this is handed in separately to your bags and bikes. Your goggles are not required until Stage 2 and can be packed when you transition.

Misc | A bike maintenance service will be available at your own cost after the finish on day 1. Please deliver bikes to the bike service area if your require this service (please bring money for this).

Day 2 Logistics | Competitors will start Day 2 at staggered intervals from 7am. The first stage of day 2 will be a run. The finish will be by bike. Competitors will need to carry a waterproof bag for valuables e.g. cars keys, wallet, mobile phone or any other items you do not wish to get wet on stage 1. There will be no transfer of kit during this section. All kit must be carried by competitors.

[14/6] So where are you all coming from? Check it out here and see if you can share a lift or two.

[12/6] OK it’s time for the first update for this year’s Open12. I’m sure you are all itching to know the location for this year’s event. The location for registration and briefing on day 1 is at the village hall in the idyllic location of West Burton (SE 016 865) which is nestled between Hawes and Leyburn just off the A684 in the beautiful surroundings of Wensleydale. Parking is just 300m on from the village hall so not too far to walk.

David Johnson, planner for this year’s event, has pulled out all the stops to bring you an Open12 to remember. He commented “As anyone familiar with the area knows there are sweeping valleys meaning some fast descents so you’ll need to check your bike brakes are in good order and your grippy trainers are still grippy! We have even found one or two little craggy surprises for you.”

Local caterers Sticky Ginger, will be providing breakfast from 9am onwards on the Saturday. They will be also ready to greet you on Sunday after you finish with a tempting array of meals, puddings and cakes.

The overnight location is still top secret, but we feel you won't be disappointed with the choice.

So that’s about all for now, but perhaps one little teaser for you is that the event actually starts outside the National Park. I’ll leave you to ponder that one until the next update....
