Adventure Racers

Spring is definitely here, and the Adventure Racing season is really starting to kick off, so its time to come out of hibernation to see what's going on.  We have the third Open5 event of the year coming up in Broughton in Furness as well frantically planning for our second Open24 in the Yorkshire Dales.

July 29/30th :: Yorkshire Dales

Numbers of competitors for the Open24 continue to come in, the next deadline before the entry fee goes up is the end of June.  Due to the nature of the course we have had to set a limit on the number of competitors (100 pairs), following the success of last year and taking in to account the entries we have already received, it is quite possible that we will have to close entries early.  So if it is vital for you to be at one of the best events this year, best fill that form in as soon as possible so you can join us.

To find out about the Open24 and the special offer from Anquet mapping for competitors have a look at the website here.

The Broughton in Furness event is just 2 weeks away. And numbers are looking to top the 150 we had at Hebden Bridge earlier in the year, so much so we have been back to find more car parking.  The event looks to pull in many excellent trails that frequent visitors to the Lakes generally miss.  It also promises to provide some challenging but entertaining running for those looking to enjoy the fresh air this part of the world has to offer.  Hopefully we will see you there.

You can find more details on this event and the rest of the Open5 series here.

Free maps

The free maps from previous events are proving popular, we still have a stack left over so if you are still umming and ahing about whether this is your bean have a look at the "New to Open5 events" page [click here]. To obtain a free map you have to send an A4 stamped addressed envelope with details of which event map you would like.  The maps are subject to availability as they are a result of the overprinting we do for entries on the day.  The offer is not available for existing competitors and excludes the Swaledale event from 2005.

Sleepmonsters Survey

Open Adventure is a great fan of Sleepmonsters the UK's Adventure Racing web portal, not only do they help in hosting our forum and race reports but they also do a cracking job of telling those of us huddled around a computer what is happening out there in the Adventure Racing world. As such we are keen to support a survey they are running with ACE races.

SleepMonsters are currently running the first comprehensive survey of adventure racing in the U.K. and are asking everyone involved in the sport to take part.

There are 40 questions, which will only take 10 minutes to complete, and its  your chance to have a say on important issues affecting the sport. Everyone who takes part goes into a prize draw for ?500 worth of great prizes and receives ?5 off a SleepMonsters buff.

To take part go to http://www.sleepmonsters.co.uk/survey.php

 Planetfear articles

Open Adventure has also been supplying photos of recent events to the Planetfear website, its worthy of a look just to see if your mugshot is displayed to the thousands who regularly visit this site.  Whilst you are there, the navigation articles by Oli Johnson one of the UK 's best orienteer's are worthy of a look.  They are generally all based around orienteering maps which few adventure races use, but the principles and advice works just as well with the Ordnance Survey maps used by Open Adventure.  You can find their website at www.planetfear.com

Gear Review

John Allen one of Open Adventures regulars (also star of a recent article id "What Mountain Bike" on Extreme MTBing!!!) has recently reviewed the EAS energy range for the Sleepmonsters gear review section.  Its an excellent impartial review of the product which many racers now use at Open Adventure's events and worthy of a look.  Check out the review here and more about EAS nutrition here

Fixed Adventure Race course

For teams keen to get out and train together, watch out for a fixed adventure race course in the Lakes. Open Adventure is working with the guys from Total Adventure in Windermere to come up with a variety of courses for families to hardened racers. The plan is to have the courses up and running by the beginning of June.  We will let you know when its ready and how you can go about using it.

Its cracking weather in the Lakes at the moment, so there is no excuse but to ditch any commitments you have and get outside.  Have a good day.

No worries
